The F–35 Joint Strike Fighter

The answer on the question sheet was "F35 JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER A.K.A. LOCKHEED MARTIN F–35 LIGHTNING II".

As a member of one of the teams that vetted these questions, I feel I should explain how this answer got to be so wordy, as I'm afraid to say I am partly responsible.

The original answer, when the questions came for vetting, was "F–35 Joint Strike Fighter". No indication was given as to which part of this answer was essential. Feeling that question masters might need some guidance, I looked the aircraft up on Wikipedia – which, I discovered, refers to it as the Lockheed Martin F–35 Lightning II.

Joint Strike Fighter, according to Wikipedia, is "a development and acquisition program intended to replace a wide range of existing fighter, strike, and ground attack aircraft for the United States, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Italy, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and their allies."

I pointed out to the question setters the name that Wikipedia uses for the aircraft (Lockheed Martin F–35 Lightning II). The only thing that this has in common with the original answer to the question is "F–35"; I anticipated that the setters would indicate that "F–35" alone should be accepted as a correct answer. But I didn't presume to suggest this myself, as the setter(s) clearly knew much more about this subject than me.

In the event, what the setter(s) actually did was just to add the alternative name to the existing answer. Unfortunately, it seems to me that all this did was to make the answer even more complicated than it was already.
